Happy National Library Lover's Month! Let's face it, we've been dealing with a lot over the past two years and our libraries have been there for us to escape and dream. Nostalgia is a peaceful escape filled with Calgon moments of easier, care-free days. Remember who you were in high school? College? In case you've forgotten, look no further than The Walker Local and Family History's Yearbook collections.
February is National Library Lovers Month and I know I'm biased, but I sure do love my library. I remember going to my first childhood library which was a square, white, cinderblock building in a one-stoplight town. It could have been Cinderella's castle to me because I loved going, browsing, and checking out books. I treasure so many fond memories of my childhood libraries and the warm, cozy feelings they provided and still provide today.
I still head towards my childhood libraries given the chance. I was riding around my hometown of Florence, SC a few years ago and found myself stopping at the South Carolina Room of the Florence County Library System. I headed straight for their yearbook collection and immediately found my senior portrait.
Oh the nostalgia that comes with our yearbook photos, notes, and autographs. Even when I peruse yearbooks that aren’t my own history, I enjoy looking at the faces, the fads of the time, and reading inscriptions. It reminds of us of youth, a slower time, and takes us back to an often cozier mental place.
Thanks to your yearbook donations, Richland Library has both physical and digital yearbook collections from various Midlands high schools, colleges, and specialty schools. We also have a small scattering of elementary and middle school yearbooks, too. From Booker T. Washington to Spring Valley, our yearbooks are super popular and we look forward to adding more!
