What is the month of Ramadan? And why do Muslims celebrate it?
The month of Ramadan is a holy month for millions of Muslims around the world who celebrate it annually.
Ramadan is the month Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent the Holy Qur'an. To commemorate and celebrate this, Muslims abstain from bad speech, confrontations, and food.
The day starts with Suhoor (early breakfast) which is eaten before the sunrises. Then from sun up to sunset Muslims will not eat or drink anything. Once the sun sets they will break their fast with dates and water, followed by Iftar (dinner). During this month Muslims take the time to focus and grow in their faith by being more charitable and giving. For Muslims fasting is about increasing and strengthening ones self control and being grateful for what you have. It a simple but powerful reminder.
At the end of Ramadan there is a big celebration called Eid al-Fitr. Everyone gathers at the masjid and celebrates by eating, exchanging gifts, and playing games.
