Choosing books for your child is a bit like a match-making process. Not all children will love the same books. To help you find the right match, we’ve curated some recommendations to try on and see what fits. After all, connecting your child with the books they want to read—just for fun—is what motivates them to become a reader.
YOUNG CHILDREN:
Sharing books together develops your young child’s brain, and improves their ability to focus and concentrate as well as their social/emotional and communication skills.
SCHOOL-AGE
Reading for just 30 minutes a day this summer can prevent additional learning loss for your school age child. It also helps ensure they return to school ready to learn. Even reading a little provides a host of benefits like increasing verbal and creative skills, nourishing their capacity for empathy, and even reducing their biases.
TEENS
Reading is important for teens for the same reasons as our youngest readers. It continues to build vocabulary and increase background knowledge. Most importantly, young adult literature allows teens to explore tough topics and helps them feel less alone. When you read or listen together, it creates a connection and offers the opportunity for conversations between you and your teen.
PERSONALIZED RECOMMENDATIONS
Stop by any location and ask our staff. They are happy to help your child or teen find their next great read. You can also fill out our personalized recommendation form on our website and tell us exactly what your reader is looking for. Within one week you’ll receive 5-10 personalized recommendations by e-mail or placed directly on your holds list.
If you find a book your child loves, keep the momentum going by using Novelist to find a list of books similar to what they're reading (bonus content includes reviews and reading level) or The Juvenile Series and Sequels database which contains more than 36,000 books in 4,900 series titles, and allows you to search by series title, series subject, book title or book author--so you'll never miss a book.
