If you didn’t know, telenovelas are a HUGE deal to the Hispanic community. The time that you reserve to watch them is SACRED! It is where you go and forget about reality. You can critique the heck out of them without shame, because well, they are not real! Plus, there are the hot stars that make these intense rides worthwhile. Telenovelas are filled with sensual scenes, hilarious and dramatic moments, secrets, and family scandals.
I remember when I used to watch telenovelas back home: 7:00 pm. Abuela, mom, primas, and even neighbors would come and gather around the tv outside in the balcón and watch an entire hour of the intense drama.
Jane the Virgin, a modern adaptation of a telenovela, came to mind when I started reading this book. If you haven’t seen it, I 100% recommend it. AND if you have... OMG, you HAVE to read this book!
You Had Me at Hola! follows the stories of Jazmin Lin Rodriguez, a young Puerto Rican & Filipino actor who’s trying to move on from a horrible and messy breakup with one of Hollywood’s bad boys. After landing a new role as the lead on a bilingual telenovela called Carmen in Charge, she realizes she has the perfect opportunity to make some changes to her life and career.
Then there’s hot, successful Puerto Rican telenovela actor--Angel Luis “Ashton” Suarez--who Jazmin admires thanks to her own abuela’s admiration for him.
Although there are no major tragedies in this novela there are a lot of secrets, including a BIG one that could destroy Ashton’s career if it ever comes out.
Being bilingual is an advantage for Jazmin but the fact that she barely speaks Spanish takes a toll on her already damaged self-esteem.
For Ashton, losing his accent to get more roles in Hollywood and finally making it into big movie roles has been a challenge. Accepting a role in this new bilingual telenovela is either the push he needs to finally make it big or the deciding factor to step away from telenovelas, for good.
Sexual tension builds: while they are in character, they can let go of the RL stress however offscreen, Jazmin and Ashton are too scared to get too close to each other because of her past and his secret.
Will Jazmin find the balance and make jefa moves on and off set and fight for herself or will she let the past consume her?
Will Ashton be able to trust and share his secret even when doing so risks his future and his career?
This first installation of the Primas of Power series by Alexis Daria will have you hooked from the first page.
