One of the goals of the Broader Bookshelf 2026 Reading Challenge is to encourage you to read more diversely and inclusively, especially books by and about people from intentionally marginalized and underrepresented communities. Books by Black authors are not only important for Black readers who want to see themselves represented in literature, but for any reader who wants to learn more about the experiences of Black people in different contexts and cultures.

To help you find some books by Black authors, I've compiled a list of titles that fit the Broader Bookshelf 2026 Reading Challenge prompts. These books are not the only ones you could choose, of course, but they include some of my favorites, and I hope you’ll enjoy them too.

Curious about the history of the challenge? Check out this post.
