Anastasia
The New Broadway Musical
[New York, New York] : Broadway Records, [2017]
Format: Music CD
Description: 1 audio disc (1 hr., 10 min.) : CD audio, digital ; 4 3/4 in.
Arriving 20 years after the animated musical film it was based on, the stage version of Anastasia, about the Russian Grand Duchess, opened on Broadway in April 2017. This original Broadway cast recording was released two months later and features the crystalline vocals of Christy Altomare (Carrie: The Musical) in the lead role, along with Derek Klena (The Bridges of Madison County) as Dmitry and A Christmas Story's John Bolton as Vlad Popov. While the musical does features several songs from the film, including Oscar nominee "Journey to the Past," they are outnumbered by new songs by the same songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, who in the interim picked up Tony Awards for Ragtime. ~ Marcy Donelson
