Let's Talk Race: A Conversation with Dr. Monique Morris
Thursday, April 22, 2021 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Hear from Dr. Monique Morris, author of Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools, and moderator, Vivian Anderson, founder of EveryBlackGirl, Inc..
Dr. Monique Morris is an award-winning author and social justice scholar with three decades of experience in the areas of education, civil rights, juvenile and social justice.
In April 2020, she became the inaugural Executive Director of Grantmakers for Girls of Color, a philanthropic collaborative that supports a world in which all girls and young women of color are healthy, safe, thriving, and fully empowered to dream and shape their desired reality on their terms, while dismantling structural barriers created by racism, sexism and ageism and other forms of oppression that prevent their full participation in our country’s future.
Dr. Morris is an executive producer and co-writer of the documentary film currently airing on PBS, Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools, which is based upon two of her books, Sing A Rhythm, Dance A Blues: Education for the Liberation of Black and Brown Girls (The New Press, 2019) and Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools (The New Press, 2016). She is also the author of Black Stats: African Americans by the Numbers in the Twenty-First Century (The New Press, 2014), Too Beautiful for Words (MWM Books, 2012), and she worked with Kemba Smith on her book, Poster Child: The Kemba Smith Story (IBJ Book Publishing, 2011).

Vivian Anderson is a healer-activist dedicated to building a world where all Black girls thrive. Since 1996, Vivian’s work has been rooted in youth, teen, family and community health/well-being, racial and social justice. Vivian began her career as a teacher at Timbuktu Academy of Science and Technology. She has also held positions with the YMCA of Greater New York (Senior Director) and interim Executive Director of Momentum Teens. Since 2014, she has been a member of BlackLivesMatter NYC.
In 2015, Vivian traded the rich networks of her home in New York City, for many unknowns in Columbia, SC. Her courage was inspired by that of two young Black girls, introduced to the world when a school resource officer at Spring Valley High School brutally assaulted one, Shakara, for refusing to hand over a cell phone, and threatened and arrested another, Niya, for standing up for Shakara in a moment when nobody else did. Thus, the #EveryBlackGirl campaign was born.
Since then, the #EveryBlackGirl campaign has become EveryBlackGirl, Inc, a 501c3 focused on creating the radical systemic change that is needed to have a world worthy of the genius and heart of Every Black Girl.
An ASL interpreter will be provided.
