Seniors, join us for a discussion of The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah in conjunction with the Aging Gracefully Lab at U of SC's Arnold School of Public Health.
We are doing this study to find out if a book club with college students and older adults affects how people of different generations interact with each other, how they perform mentally, how they feel about the internet, and how they enjoy their life in general. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to be in one of two groups:
You will either be part of an intergenerational book club with older people and college students for 10 weekly sessions, where you will be asked to complete several tests and surveys in the first and last sessions, then be part of the book club for the other 8 sessions.
Or you will be asked to complete a series of tests and surveys 2-3 times over the course of 10 weeks without being part of the book club.
We will ask you questions about how you feel, think, talk with others, and use the internet. You may also be asked to talk about getting older, what it is like to interact with people of other ages, and about the book club in general. There is minimal risk to you being part of this project. The meetings will take place at community centers in Columbia and will last about an hour. Depending on the group you are in, you will participate in 2-10 sessions over a period of 10 weeks. The sessions will be taped so that we can remember and write down what is discussed. The tapes will only be reviewed by members of the research team and will be destroyed when the study is over.
Your participation is confidential. The information you give us will be kept in a safe location at the University of South Carolina. The results of the study may be published or presented at professional meetings, but your identity will not be revealed.
Others in the group will hear what you say, and it is possible that they could tell someone else. Because we will be talking in a group, we cannot promise that what you say will remain completely private, but we will ask that you and all other group members respect the privacy of everyone in the group.
Your participation is voluntary. You can stop participating at any time without giving a reason. Doing that will not affect any services you may receive from any of the agencies where the book club meets or the University of South Carolina. You will receive a $10 gift card for participating in the study. You will receive it during the final session when we give the tests and surveys for the second time. If you are in the book club, we ask that you attend at least 8 of the 10 sessions to get a $10.00 gift card. You will get a $10.00 gift card if you are in the control group and have come to at least 2 sessions
