This workshop introduces participants to Tinikling, one of the oldest folk dances of the Philippines.
Celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month at the library with dancers from the Filipino American Association of Greater Columbia.
Tinikling: It is named after the bird "tikling" because the dance imitates how this bird walks and jumps over branches and farm traps with its long legs. The dance includes two bamboo sticks that are held parallel to each other near the floor by clappers who remain kneeled down during the dance. The sticks are clapped together in a beat as dancers dance across them while eluding having their legs trapped by the sticks. Sometimes, there are two pairs of bamboo sticks that are perpendicular to each other. Sometimes, the beat increases in speed which makes it more challenging and fun to dance.
