Richland Library Main
Filipino Guitar Workshop
Saturday, October 28, 2023 3 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Come join world-renowned Filipino musicians Michael Dadap and Florante Aguilar in a collaborative sharing of traditional Filipino music genres.
Richland Library welcomes members of the Filipino-American Association of Greater Columbia, who will join in with a few vocals and a dance to help exhibit the variety of songs that make Filipinos unique. Come engage with the musicians, and learn about the rich cultural traditions of Filipino music!
As composers and accomplished classical guitarists, Michael Dadap and Florante Aguilar float freely across musical idioms, drawing on an array of sounds from indigenous music to orchestral works. Both classically-trained, Dadap and Aguilar are deeply rooted in the folkloric traditions of the Philippines, capturing the attention of international audiences with their dynamic ensemble playing. Their compositions and arrangements for guitar reflect the culmination of influences – from both their homeland and the western classical tradition.
There will be a special performance by the Dadap-Aguilar duo at the USC Recital Hall the following day, October 29th, at 3pm.
This project is funded in part by the Filipino American Association of Greater Columbia (FAAGC), Arthaland, the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs, and the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
