STEAM Studio: Race Across the Blythewood Basin
Saturday, June 20, 2026 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Take on the Blythewood Basin by designing, assembling, and sailing your handmade watercraft across its treacherous terrain. Participants will have 1 hour to plan, construct, and float test their watercrafts. This is a timed found material competition. Time for each task will vary based on the average age of contestants. Contestants will have 10 to 15 minutes to collect and examine build materials, 15 to 20 minutes to draft and submit their sketch for their watercraft. Sketches must include materials to be used, watercraft theme, top, side, and bottom view of watercraft. No building can occur before sketch is completed and signed off on. All changes made after initial sketch approval must be noted and submitted to judges before evaluations begin or points will be deducted. Participants will be judged on if their watercraft floats, sails, and holds weight. Additional points can be earned by participating in surprise battle events that will occur throughout the event and before judging. Competition clock will be paused during surprise events. If you choose not to participate in surprise event you'll be able to work though events with no penalty given and no points awarded. This is going be a wet one so be sure to bring a change of clothes as towels will not be provided.
