Noirvember: Film Noir Around The World

Welcome to Noirvember! Can you feel the shadows growing around you? Film noir is a movie genre known for its cynical and existential characters and situations. You will often find corruption, organized crime, femme fatales, paranoia, and antiheroes, and the endings are rarely happy or just. Each entry on this list represents a take on film noir or has elements of noir, and comes from a different country. This sampling includes crime thrillers and murder mysteries alongside sci-fi and dreamlike elements.

Cowboy Bebop's Cinematic Influences

The opening to each episode of Cowboy Bebop contains the text, "They must create new dreams and films by breaking traditional styles. The work, which becomes a new genre itself, will be called Cowboy Bebop." The anime series mixed genres such as westerns, science fiction, martial arts, and blaxploitation to create a unique blend that's still cool to this day. With a live-action adaptation right around the corner, fans might be interested in watching some of the films that directly inspired the anime.

The great director made her first film, La Pointe Courte, in 1955 and her last, Faces Places, in 2017. The mother of the French New Wave, she earned a well deserved late career resurgence with her lovely, inventive documentary The Gleaners and I.  She was the first woman director to be recognized with an honorary Oscar, which she received at the 2018 Academy Awards where she was also nominated for her work on Faces Places.
