Celebrating Veterans Around Town
Throughout the entire month of November, we are highlighting veterans as part of our One Book, One Community shared reading experience. In addition to Richland Library's special programs and events, here are some other things happening around town to celebrate and honor those who have served our country.
The Gallery at City Hall -- 1737 Main Street, Columbia SC 29201
October 1, 2018 - December 31, 2018 -- Weekdays 8:30am-5:00pm
This photography display is a collaboration between the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center Trauma Recovery Program (TRP) and the Big Red Barn Retreat to allow our Veterans the opportunity to represent their experiences with PTSD, as well as where they are in terms of growth as a result of involvement in treatment. The hope for this display is that those who view these photographs will be moved by their messages and it will allow the audience the ability to see PTSD through a different lens. Curated by Elizabeth Codega LCSW and the Big Red Barn Retreat.

South Carolina State Library -- 1500 Senate Street, Columbia, SC 29201
November 1, 2018 - January 9, 2019 -- 8:30am-5:00pm
In honor of South Carolina veterans this fall, the State Library is partnering with the S.C. Chapter of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) to host a rotating exhibit of patriotic Quilts of Valor. A Quilt of Valor is a handmade quilt of the highest quality made by volunteers of S.C. Quilts of Valor. It is a lifetime award given by civilians to veterans in an effort to convey to them that we “Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and valor.” Throughout this three month exhibit, quilts on display will be awarded to South Carolina veterans and active military service members from the Midlands in Awards Ceremonies held at the SC State Library. Six award ceremonies are scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesdays at the S.C. State Library on November 7, 2018 as well as November 14, November 28, December 5, December 12, and January 9, 2019. The S.C. Chapter of Quilts of Valor is comprised of hundreds of volunteer South Carolinians and several S.C. quilting guilds across the state.
