Riding Out the Storm: Home Entertainment

If the weather takes a turn for the worse, and you find yourself stuck inside a hotel room or a house, Richland Library's staff have some suggestions to keep the entire family entertained while riding out the storm.

For Children:

  • Round Robin Ghost Stories:
    Go around in a circle and each person adds a new plot twist. Some good openers include “She seemed like a regular kid. I never expected she was really a…” or “My grandfather’s dying words were…” Or you can always go with the classic, “It was a dark and stormy night.”
  • Shadow Puppets Using Flashlights:
    If you are stuck in a hotel, clear out the closet and let the kids hang out in there.
  • Paper Airplanes:
    Extra points given for creativity and flight time.
  • Home Scavenger Hunt
  • Yoga or Fitness Challenges
  • Write and Illustrate Your Own Stories
  • READ! Title suggestions include:
    If I Had a Raptor by George O'Connor
    One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia
    Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix
    The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper

For Teens:

  • Coloring:
    It’s not just for kids anymore. There are tons of coloring books, printable pages and coloring apps for teens and adults.
  • Dig Out a Deck of  Cards or Some Old Board Games:
    These games are not only a fun blast from the past, but they encourage spatial and cognitive development.
  • Practice the Art of Calligraphy:
    This long lost art is making a comeback in a big way. Find some tutorials online or just wing it. Sketch out some of your favorite quotes with your prettiest pens, markers or pencils.
  • Building Crafts:
    Legos and other building blocks, even popsicle sticks and toothpicks. Build with whatever you can. What can create the tallest tower? The longest bridge? The challenges and creations are endless.
  • Charades:
    It’s a classic for a reason. All you need are a few scraps of paper, some fun pop culture references and a sense of humor.
  • READ!  Title suggestions include:
    Illuminae by Amie Kaufman;
    An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir;
    Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard;
