What's next??
Having been an avid fan of the Fallout franchise for over a decade, I was stoked when I heard it would be made into a TV show. But, of course, it turns out 8 episodes is just enough to whet my appetite for more nuclear-focused post-apocalyptic exploration. If you feel the same way, this blog is for you!
We’ll start off with some of the books/movies that have inspired Fallout over the years.
A Boy and His Dog
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
The Postman
A Boy and His Dog
I Am Legend
Some more TV shows and movies that fit the mood:
The Book of Eli
The Day After
Jericho. The First Season
Threads
Trigun. The Complete Series
The World, the Flesh and the Devil
Books that will keep the feeling going:
One Second After
Metro 2033
Hugh Howey's Wool
Wool
Supernova Era
Swan Song
Trigun Maximum Vol. 01, Hero Returns
The Electric State
As the only country that has actually experienced a nuclear attack, Japanese media deserves a special place on this list. In the original film, the now-well-known kaiju, Godzilla, was awoken by a nuclear attack that destroyed his home and he came to the surface enraged and wreaking havoc. After Godzilla is finally defeated, it is posited that there may be other creatures still sleeping under the earth and the use of more bombs could bring them to the surface to destroy everything in their path. The metaphor is painfully clear.
Godzilla
It seems a little odd for humans to be so entertained by apocalyptic tales, but it makes sense for us to want to work through our anxiety over world-ending bombs, war, and everything those entail. In a time of turmoil, going over worst-case scenarios can bring some peace.
May you live in uninteresting times.
