A Pale Horse
A Novel of Suspense
Late on a spring night in 1920, amid the ruins of Yorkshire's Fountains Abbey, five mischievious young boys run away in fear when they stumble upon the Devil himself sitting in the shadows. Then, a body is discovered in the abbey's cloisters--swathed in a hooded cloak, his face hidden under a gas mask. Already, rumor has begun to travel that the dead man was connected to the British government's wartime poison gas program.
Scotland Yard dispatches Inspector Rutledge to take control of the case. But teasing answers from the closely-knit, close-mouthed villagers proves extraordinarily difficult--and unleashes terrifying memories the detective struggles to keep at bay. And what does the huge chalk sculpture of a pale horse of the Apocalypse have to do with the crime
