Flo Matthews is sixteen, when a mysterious long hunter, Clete Barnes, saves her from a bear attack outside her parents' cabin. Flo soon tells her mother that she wants to marry her soft-spoken savior, and is warned that long hunters - men who hunt for settlements and forts, sometimes for months at a time - are seldom truly able to settle down. But Flo and Clete persist and are married - and Clete soon goes on another hunt. But while he's away, Flo and their son are taken captive by Iroquois. By the time Clete finds them, Flo is the woman of an Iroquois man who may not let her go. And Flo might not want to leave.
