  • Making Summer Count

Why is summer reading so important? It helps prevent the Summer Slide.

Want to learn more about the issue of summer learning loss? This short video is a powerful visual representation of the Summer Slide.

Summer Slide, or summer learning loss, refers to the unfortunate issue that on average students lose up to two months of learning over the summer. Summer learning loss often impacts low-income students the most, and the loss is cumulative, getting worse each and every summer.

However, there is good news! Reading for just 30 minutes a day can prevent the Summer Slide and help ensure that students return to school in August ready to learn.

We are committed to helping every student avoid the Summer Slide with a summer full of reading and learning.

📚 Expert Book Suggestions:

Need help finding that just-right summer read? Browse our book suggestions, fill out our Personalized Recommendations form or call your favorite Richland Library location - our staff can't wait to recommend a stack of books sure to interest even the most reluctant reader!

🌞Summer Reading and Learning Programs:

You can also sign up for a summer reading or learning program in your area--most don't even require a library card to participate. Our Summer Learning Challenge lets participants earn points for reading, completing learning activities and attending any of the many events we have planned this summer.

✏️School Reading Lists:

Many schools assign summer reading to keep their students engaged in learning over the summer. We've gathered our local schools' summer reading lists below to make it easy to find your assignment.

We've included all lists that are currently available online. If you don't see a school listed below or have questions, please contact your school directly. You can check out these titles from your nearest library location or place them on hold using our online catalog.
