DIY Storytimes are curated storytimes that families can share at home with an ebook, songs and activities.
A BOOK TO SHARE:
Get Up, Stand Up adapted by Cedella Marley | illustrated by John Jay Cabuay | based on the song by Bob Marley
available as an ebook through Hoopla
"Love with all your might,
BE TRUE to what is right."
Children are often the first ones to talk about what's right and what's wrong. Actions that are unkind, unfair or unjust are clear to them. They will say, "That's mean!" or "That's wrong!" However, they can feel powerless to address the wrong.
Read this book together. Talk about what they can do to make a change. Whether fighting racism, cleaning up their neighborhood or standing up to a bully, children need to feel empowered to stand up for what's right.
SONGS & POEMS:
Warrior from Just Like Me by Vanessa Brantley-Newton
Stand up and recite this poem together.
I am a warrior
willing to fight the good fight
Respectfully
with humanity
and lovingly
with all the kindness inside of me
In my own unique way
I am a warrior
willing to fight the good fight
of love.
ACTIVITIES:
- READ (or LISTEN)--"Reading is not optional."--Walter Dean Myers. Books and stories help you understand the world and the people living in it. If you want to know about stopping racism, healing the environment or ending hunger, read (or listen) to books and stories. Richland Library recommends these books as a start. Ask a Librarian for more recommendations.
- Use Your Voice--If you see something wrong in the world, talk about it. Educate your friends and family. Open their eyes and hearts to injustice.
- Raise Money--Ask friends and family to donate to support organizations working to make a change. Start a lemonade stand or mow lawns to raise money. You can do it!
- Get Out the Vote--You may be too young to vote, but it doesn't mean you can't talk about why it's important and remind your friends and family to vote.
- Make Art--Use sidewalk chalk or yard signs to share messages that support causes you care about or encourage change.
