May is National Bike Month, and although it may strike you as something that was only recently adopted, it has actually been observed since 1956. Taking part in the observations is quite simple, too. Sunday, May 2nd, will be the inaugural National Ride a Bike Day, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists. To participate, all you have to do is go for a ride – any kind of ride – and, if you like, tag any related social media posts with #BikeDay. If you’re a bike commuter, or would like to become one, Bike to Work Week is May 17-23, and Bike to Work Day is Friday the 21st. (And now is a good time to try this out if you’ve not attempted it before, because I can attest that traffic volumes in downtown Columbia are still relatively light compared to pre-pandemic levels.)
