Kids of all ages can explore the impact that humans have on the Earth's land, water, and air. People can have a positive or a negative impact on the Earth depending on the choices we make. This simple DIY bird feeder will allow you to reduce waste by reusing a cardboard roll, AND help out nature by providing a food source for birds!
Materials:
- Toilet Paper or Paper Towel Roll
- spoon
- honey
- plate or container
- twine
- scissors
- bird seed
As humans we can reduce our impact on the Earth when we learn to reduce, reuse, and recycle. When we reuse something, we use something more than once. With this DIY craft you will reuse a cardboard tube that otherwise would have gone to a landfill, and re-purpose it into a food source for birds. When the birds smell and see the seed on your bird feeder, they will fly over and pull some off. If you place your completed bird feeder near a window, you will be able to watch them without scaring them away!
Steps:
- Pour bird seed into a container or storage bag.
- Spread some honey on the outside of a empty toilet paper tube.
- Use the spoon to thinly coat the entire surface of the tube.
- Roll the tube into the bird seed so that it gets covered in seeds.
- Cut a piece of sting about as long as your arm.
- Insert the string into the tube and tie it in a loop.
- Hang the bird feeder on a tree outside and watch the birds each the seeds.
Extension Activity:
Once your child sees how easy it is to make a positive impact on the Earth, they may want to know other ways they can help. You can grab a few items around the house, and set up a quick sorting activity. Have them sort the items into a group that can be recycled, and a group of items that have to go to the trash can. Be sure to point out the recycling symbol on items like cans and bottles. Once they have this awareness, they can develop solutions for reducing waste!
