"There'll be me and Mama."
- Cozbi A. Cabrera, Me & Mama
In Cozbi A. Cabrera's Coretta Scott King Award-winning Me & Mama, the day begins with Mama sings "bright as sun" to welcome her young child to a brand new, exciting day. Although it's still early in the morning, her child shares that she just wants "to be everywhere Mama is."
The two begin their day together with the usual routine of enjoying breakfast, brushing their teeth, and getting dressed, and the two embark on a casual adventure through the rain. Despite the dreary skies, the love the two have for each other is still more than enough to brighten each other's day. Their day concludes with Mama reading to her children and kissing them goodnight, while wrapping them in both blankets and the warmth of her love.
As a daughter to a mother that I have, honestly, been attached to, this short but sweet story resonates with me. The awe that I had as a child for my mother....the way she smelled when I hugged her to the way that I felt comfort and security when she would read a new book to me all comes flooding back to my memory when I read this story. How I hope to have a similar effect on my own son and make his world just as magical once he's born comes to mind, as well.
This beautifully written and illustrated book captures how a mother can make her little one's world feel so big and full, just by doing the simple things that she might not even realize are making a huge impact. A lot of mothers aim to give their children the world, not realizing that to their little one, their mother is the world. This is a story that families will love, and they will hopefully see themselves in every line and on every page. It's the perfect story to add to your own perfect day!
