First Steps to the Library highlights the skills young children need to be ready for school and helps caregivers understand how they can grow these skills.

You Did It! I Did It!
School Readiness Skill: Children express positive feelings about themselves and confidence in what they can do.
"All families can help each other be strong."--The Family Book by Todd Parr
When your child feels connected to you, they are secure. Security grows their self-esteem. Security builds their confidence in themselves and their abilities.
Create Connections with Your Little One
Building connections is simple but it does take time and intention:
- Good morning/Goodnight : Both waking up and bedtime offer opportunities. Take a minute in the morning to cuddle your little one awake or share affirmations for the day. At night, read together, say a prayer or a special goodnight wish.
- 5 minutes: Every day, give your child 5 uninterrupted minutes of your time and focus with no distractions.
- Dinnertime: Put away devices and spend meal time talking about the day.
It's okay if you can't make all 3 happen every day, just do your best. Your child will notice.
