First Steps to the Library highlights the skills young children need to be ready for school and helps caregivers understand how they can grow these skills.
Big Words & Big Dreams
School Readiness Skill: Children use most grammatical constructions of their home language well.
"Little One | I want you to meet | the Latinitas | whose big dreams | paved the way | for your little feet." --Dream with the Latinitas by Juliet Menéndez
What is home language? "A language learned in childhood in the home environment, also referred to as mother tongue, first language, or native language."--UNESCO Institute for Statistics
Your home language is important. It is the first language that connects your child to you. It connects them to their family, friends, neighbors and to their culture and traditions.
Nurturing Your Home Language at Home:
- " Tell stories and read to your children in your home language."
- "Share rhymes, chants, songs, and poems you learned as a child."
- "Look for fun activities happening in your language, such as storytime at your local library, festivals, and cultural events."
- "Look for bilingual books, wordless books, or books in your home language at the library."--The Gift of Language | Early Childhood Learning & Knowledge Center
