Dear Librarian

Dear Librarian

Published in 2021
When Lydia was five years old, she and her family had to leave their home. They hopped from Grandma's house to Aunt Linda's house to Cousin Alice's house, but no place was permanent. Then one day, everything changed: Lydia's mom took her to a new place? Not a house but a big building with stone columns and tall tall steps. The library. In the library, Lydia found her special spot across from the sunny window at a round desk. For behind that desk was her new friend, the librarian. Together, Lydia and the librarian discovered a world beyond their walls, one that sparkled with spectacular joy.

The (East) German film collection is presented by the DEFA film library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The DEFA film library is the only archive and research center outside Europe devoted to the study of a broad spectrum of filmmaking from or related to East Germany from 1946 to the present. Its film series have been featured at venues throughout North America and elsewhere in the world. The DEFA film library has access to over 7500 films that were made at the GDR's DEFA Studios between the end of WWII and German unification in 1990. These films ran the gamut: dramas and comedies, love stories and war stories, Westerns and sci-fi films, animation films, documentaries, newsreels and Cold War propaganda. DEFA, the acronym for Deutsche Film Aktiengesellschaft (German film company), was heir to some of the greats of German film history and the historic compound in Potsdam-Babelsberg where legendary Ufa directors made such landmark films asMetropolis andThe Blue Angel.

The Hollywood Librarian

The Hollywood Librarian

A Look at Librarians Through Film
Published in 2014
They have more cardholders than VISA, more customers than Amazon, and more outlets than McDonald's. Meet America's librarians. The Hollywood Librarian: A Look at Librarians Through Film is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject of librarians. A vivid blend of factual documentary, feature film, and storytelling, it reveals the history and realities of librarianship in the entertaining and appealing context of American movies. Interviews with actual librarians, intercut with film clips of cinematic librarians, examine such issues as literature, books and reading, censorship, library funding, citizenship and democracy. For the first time, we see and understand the real lives and real work of American librarians who for decades have been a cultural force hiding in plain sight. This film's subject is librarians: who they are, what they do, why they do it, and the impact of their work in people's lives. The underlying meaning is how we express our own humanity, how we listen to ourselves and one another in the realm of the written and read word - a uniquely human privilege. Audiences will be surprised and delighted by the fascinating librarians in this entertaining and enlightening film, and will emerge with a greater appreciation for the range of literature and materials available to them thanks to our nation's librarians.

Schomburg

The Man Who Built a Library.
Published in 2017
Amid the scholars, poets, authors, and artists of the Harlem Renaissance stood an Afro-Puerto Rican named Arturo Schomburg. This law clerk's life's passion was to collect books, letters, music, and art from Africa and the African diaspora and to bring to light the achievements of people of African descent throughout the ages. When Schomburg's collection became so big that it began to overflow his house (and his wife threatened to mutiny), he turned to the New York Public Library, where he created and curated a collection that was the cornerstone of a new Negro Division. A century later, his groundbreaking collection, known as the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, has become a beacon to scholars all over the world.
