With coverage spanning decades, the Free Times archive adds a new perspective to Columbia’s history, now available for in-library use.
The Free Times archive is now cataloged and available for in-library use at the Walker Local and Family History Center at Richland Library Main, giving customers access to decades of local reporting on arts, culture, and community life.
Customers can browse current and back issues on site, including issues from its earliest years beginning in 1987, with older issues collected in bound volumes. While there are a few gaps in the collection, the archive spans Free Times lifespan and is a valuable resource for anyone exploring Columbia’s past.
For those conducting research, staff can assist with scanning materials for personal use, in accordance with copyright guidelines.
While there are no plans to digitize the full archive, this is just the beginning. The Walker Local and Family History Center staff are starting a long-term project to create a searchable index of table of contents, covers, and major articles, making it easier to locate specific information over time.
This addition helps round out how we document and share Columbia’s story.
“Free Times adds another voice to how we look at Columbia’s history,” said Margaret Dunlap, Local History Manager. “Having it available in the Walker Local and Family History Center gives customers a new way to explore the conversations and moments that have shaped the city over time.”
