Richland Library is piloting a new collection: ZINES. Located at the Main library, this collection features zines created locally.
"Historically, zines have provided perspectives from voices that have been filtered or silenced."
What Are Zines?
"A zine, short for fanzine or magazine, is a DIY & subculture self-publication, usually made on paper and reproduced with a photocopier or printer. Zine creators are often motivated by a desire to share knowledge or experience with people in marginalized or otherwise less-empowered communities" (Barnard Zine Library External)
Zines are typically small, roughly bound paper pamphlets designed to share information about a specific topic, opinion, or simply to share one's artwork with the wider community. Historically, they have been created to resist mainstream culture and are often politically charged. While they have been around for over 100 years, they rocketed to popularity during the 90s Riot Grrrl movement and punk rock scene and have been a part of underground culture ever since. They are typically printed on regular computer paper and often have elements of collage and hand-drawn images. Libraries around the world have been offering zine collections in recent years and it's about time we offered this space to our local creators as well, don’t you think?
The zine collection is currently housed at Richland Library Main but they are holdable and can be sent to any Richland Library location! You can check out up to 5 at a time for up to 3 weeks.
"I appreciate that I can share my message on my own terms, not dependent on a social media or web hosting company to decide what I can say and who sees it."
Zine culture in entrenched in DIY. Zines can be created using stickers, magazine clippings, stencils, stamps, and more. A part of the goal of zines is not to make money, but to create community, share information, and express onesself.
Can I Submit a Zine?
Yep! Fill out a submission form and donate a copy (or two!) of your zine to any Richland Library location.
